Extracurricular activities are those programs that have all of the following characteristics:
1. The program is supervised or financed by the school district.
2. Students participating in the program represent the school district.
3. Students exercise some degree of freedom in the selection, planning, or control of the program.
4. The program includes both preparation for performance and performance before an audience or spectators.
Cocurricular activities are programs that may be associated with the curriculum in a regular classroom.
1. It is a teacher-graded or required program or activity for a course which satisfies the entrance requirements for admission to the California State University or the University of California.
2. It is a program that has as its primary goal the improvement of academic or educational achievement of students.
(a) Cocurricular activity is any activity that is a direct extension of a course in which the student is enrolled, such as a choral performance of the songs studied in a chorus class (exception: a sport activity is not an extension of the P.E. program).
(b) Extracurricular is any school sponsored activity that is not a direct extension of a course offered in the school program.
2. To be eligible to participate in extracurricular activities, students in grades 7-12 must earn a GPA of at least 2.0 and must be progressing toward graduation.
(a) Grade eligibility shall be determined by the grades received at the end of the first and third quarter and by the first and second semester grades.
(b) Students shall be “progressing toward graduation” by being enrolled each semester in those courses that the District requires for a diploma. Electives are permitted only after the required courses are scheduled.
3. All courses in which a student receives a letter grade (A-F) and is receiving school credit will be counted toward the GPA calculations.
(a) If a student becomes ineligible for participation in school sponsored activities, the suspension shall be effective within five (5) school days of the date the report card is issued.
(b) Such suspension shall remain in effect until the grades are given according to 2(a).
(c) The school shall notify the parents in writing as soon as practical after the ineligibility is determined.
(a) Students who transfer to the MJUSD shall have their eligibility based on their eligibility status in the district from which they transferred until the end of their first full grading period in the MJUSD, provided that eligibility meets minimum State and CIF standards. At that time, local eligibility criteria shall be applied. Sports eligibility shall be determined by CIF.
(b) A transferring student whose status cannot be determined shall remain ineligible until district personnel are able to confirm the student’s eligibility in the previous school by telephone, transcripts, or transferring grades.
