SITE SUPERVISED INDEPENDENT STUDY

When it is necessary for a student to have a variation from attendance in regularly scheduled classes in the school's program, he/she may be assigned to a course in Independent Study for the subject area of need. Independent Study classes may be assigned according to the following guidelines:

  1. The student has a need to take a District-approved course that is not currently offered at the school, or if offered, is not available to the student because of schedule conflicts.

  2. The student has demonstrated an ability to work independently, with less-than-normal contact with the instructor.

  3. The curriculum for the Independent Study class, including materials, objectives, and student evaluation procedures are comparable to those of regularly scheduled classes in that same subject matter area.

  4. Parental consent is obtained for the student to participate.

  5. A qualified instructor is available to monitor student progress on a regular basis and evaluate his/her performance in terms of grades and semester units earned.

  6. There is a clear understanding of the following concepts: length of time the class will last, maximum number of units to be earned, frequency of student-teacher contact, progress reports during the class, and final grade reports at the end of the class.

  7. Independent Study classes may be offered during a summer session for students who are delinquent in credits who need to complete course work in a variety of subject areas. In these summer courses, the regular rules for summer school attendance will apply.
