ALTERNATIVE PHYSICAL EDUCATION OPTIONS

Students may fulfill the Physical Education graduation requirement in the following alternative ways:

  1. Interscholastic Athletics - A maximum of ten (10) semester units of the required twenty (20) may be earned through successful completion of a season as a member of an interscholastic sports team. Two and one-half (2.5) units of credit will be granted for completion of one (1) season as a member of an interscholastic sports team. In order for a student to receive PE credits for participation in interscholastic athletics, the parent/guardian of that student must submit a written request to the school. The request must include the year and semester for which credit is to be given, the specific interscholastic sports team the student successfully completed, the signature of the coach of that team certifying that the student successfully completed the season, and the signature of the parent/guardian.

  2. Cheerleaders - A maximum of ten (10) semester units of the required twenty (20) may be earned through successful completion of a season as a member of a cheerleading team. Two and one-half (2.5) units of credit will be granted for completion of one (1) season as a member of a cheerleading team. In order for a student to receive PE credits for participation in cheerleading, the parent/guardian of that student must submit a written request to the school. The request must include the year and semester for which credit is to be given, the specific cheerleading team the student successfully completed, the signature of the coach of that team certifying that the student successfully completed the season, and the signature of the parent/guardian.

  3. Participation in a non school-sponsored organized athletic or dance group that competes or performs at a high level. Groups such as performing dance teams, and athletic groups such as pre-Olympic skating teams could qualify.

In order to receive a maximum of ten (10) semester units of the required twenty (20) Physical Education units required for graduation, the following criteria must be met:

  1. A request for alternative PE credit must be submitted by the parent/guardian of the student that describes the program including: the purpose of the program, the duration of the program, the time commitment required by the program, the physical activities involved in the program, and the qualifications of the person providing the instruction in the program.

  2. The principal or designee will evaluate the request and determine the amount, if any, of alternative PE credit that will be granted upon successful completion of the program.

  3. After the completion of the program, the instructor of the program will provide the principal or designee documentation which verifies the successful completion of the program by the student
